Colm McCarthy: Should we think again? If the Connolly site is likely to be cheaper, this really matters in an over- borrowed country

The Government appears hell-bent on going ahead with the National Children’s Hospital in an inner suburb of Dublin, adjacent to the existing St James’s Hospital.

The cost overrun revealed two weeks ago, before a sod has been turned, is reason enough to reconsider the Government’s commitment. It makes a mockery of Government financial planning if cost estimates are so untrustworthy.

'It's never too late to do the right thing': Children's hospital controversy rumbles on

OVER 50 TDS yesterday attended a presentation seriously criticising the Government’s decision to place the new national children’s hospital at the site of St James’s hospital.

Independent TD Mattie McGrath, who hosted yesterday’s meeting, said that an all-party motion calling for the suspension of the proposed National Children’s Hospital project at St James’s is now “a distinct possibility”.

Children’s hospital location not ‘up for debate’ despite poll

The decision on the location of the new children’s hospital is not up for debate, the head of the hospital’s development board has said.

Eilis Hardiman, chief executive of the National Children’s Hospital Development Board made the comment in light of a poll indicating that 73 per cent of people believe that St James’s Hospital is the wrong location for the new children’s hospital.
